Man, Ethiopia has lost one of the greatest person ever. Haddis is the first person to capture attentions of different age group readers. I do remember, it was 1982 kiremt, while i was 8 yrs old, my eyes has attracted by his book "Fiker eske Mekabir" on my dads book shelve. It was kept clean and binded and signed by my dad as he us. does... I decided to read the book ... just because I liked the cover page.... i doubt if i had any idea about "love or fiker" I mean romantic one. That book was really increadable, I still remember I finshed reading in a week.... Gash Haddis is wonderful, he captured almost all kinds of people interest. "Ha bilo" He captured peoples attention from what a true Love mean... he showed wealth, power and love doesn't have any relation to devote your life for the thing you love. He tought everyone a great indurance and strong manner to follow in the way you believe with thos two ideal persons (Seble & bezabh). Sometimes, I am wondering if there was in those two identity. I was so wowed with his work... and I guess that was my first impression on his talent how he could change peoples perception and awareness of Love. Haddis is a great person and I hope Heavenly Father, put his soul in peace.::::I thank you for teaching me what a true love means and what you need to put into relationship.... those things I read while I was eight helped me for the real Danny I am right now.::::May his soul rest in Peace.

A great man has gone forever from planet earth but the legacy he left behind is immortal! He was one of those very few who left behind an indelible mark in our recent history. He will be rembered through his wonderful works for the generation to come. May the Lord rest his soul in the place of the blessed saints. My condolences to his family and may the Lord give you comfort and peace.

The passing away of this GREAT man and his likes concretizes the piece-by- piece dying away of what used to be an honest, resolute, upright, highly civilised and fiercely independent Ethiopiawinet. Shame on each succeeding generation that mutilated and sold out and still sells out leferefari the country, its people and its history.

What a great man we lost! Very few get the chance to touch so many hearts and do so much good for their country like Dr Haddis has done. A patriot and a great writer, he was very much respected and loved .the late artist wegayehu nigatu narration of fiqir iske meqabir was heard by all those who had the access of radio at that time. Those who had access for the book and who could read have read the book and regard it as a great national treasure that it is .Wonderful writing along with contemporary thinking Haddiss books have contributed a lot for the development of Ethiopian literature. Today we feel the painful stab of his loss and our hearts cry in sadness so deep because we know our motherland Ethiopia has lost a great man who loved her beyond measure who has done a lot of good for her. In haddis we have seen how much good one man is capable of doing for so many in his time and for the coming generation. A hero in every sense he was so he will live forever in history and our hearts .the good example he set for us in serving our country in what ever way we can, we will always strive to follow. People like him dont just die and be forgotten their work makes them immortal that even death cant kill their name(metsafachinim indih yelal zikre tsadiq lealem yehelu weyem yetsadiq metasebiya lezelalem yenoralmezmure dawit 111:7) .Dr Haddis is not dead he lives on forever! May God rest his soul in peace, amen. My deepest sympathy to his families. Egziabeher tsinatun yistachihu.

I also wanted to say that I wrote my essay for a college application based on his most celebrated book Fekere Eske mekabere and I truly believe if it had not been for his literary work (critic on this book) I wouldnt be a part of this specific university. Haddis Alemayehu: A patriot, a teacher, a diplomat, a statesman, a philosopher, a thinker, and an intellectual. Oh, he was a writer too! A writer, did I say? Just a writer? Is that title adequate for Kibur Ato Haddis Alemayehu?! No, he was indeed the writer of writers, the poet of poets, the novelist of novelists. He shall remain an eternal torch and a shining star in modern Ethiopian literature. He is a gem, a treasure, an icon in Ethiopian literature, history, and diplomacy. He shall remain an influential literary figure among my own and coming generations. I, like millions of Ethiopians of the younger generation, owe my literary interests to him. I love you, Haddis Alemayehu. I hope and pray that God will bless Ethiopia with sons and daughters who possess the same caliber and wisdom as you did. If we really keep what he left us through this book we can make him alive. But we are unfortunate if we do not have a man who replaces him.

Dec 22, 2003 at 20:47:41 Haimanot Kassa (khaimanot@yahoo.com)
Dr. Haddis Alemayehu was an icon to Ethiopia. He expressed ethiopias cultural values through his book and life. He lived in the culture, and he lived the culture itself. The culture lived in him too. Thus, to pass his cultural wealth, we need some one to write his (auto)biography. It should be a great thing to do for those of us who have the talent and the means.::::May be a doctoral thesis or some lifetime accomplishment!!!! Go ahead...you could do it.

I am sad because he and people like him despite their rich intelectual and work experience did not get the time and reasources to write their memoire, which could have helped and enriched the knowledge base of succeeding generations. This is a big lesson for all Ethiopians to collectively think of a mechanism where such knowledgable personalities do not pass with out documenting their rich experience.::::Egziabher Nefsachewn ke Abraham ena ke Sara gone be Mengiste Semait Yanurew, Amen.

Mine is a bit different. I feel the loss as much as any considerate Ethiopian. But I can't deny that I found it so distressing to see that not one - even one - letter of condolence to Haddis Alemayehu was in correct English. He would cherish us (this generation) more if he could see that we write our ideas in clear and correct language, be it in English or Amharic, than seeing us praying at his grave. That was what he spent all his life struggling to achieve. And look at what his dreams ended up like. Bunch of Ethiopian youngsters who seem to grieve his death, and none of us able to write even one line of correct English. That would torment him in his grave, believe me. Let us PLEASE mind our language. Please!

Haddis Alemayehu is dead

He will be specially remembered for his book FIKIR ISKEMEQABIR in which he exposed the arrogance and inhuman nature of feudalism to its bone. Coming from a man born in the north (Gojam) the book is a unique contribution unlike the usual rhetoric of praise that we used to hear from his contemporaries.

May his soul rest in peace!!!!!

i my self read the book when i was a 9 grade student. we need such figure from south, is that not? i suppose. Had Haddis Alemayehu supported the feudals because of many of them had Amhara blood? Not at all. this is how Ethiopian nationalism had boiled right from 0 OC, just by standing for the equality of all and exposing the bad human nature. It is also the essence of Ethiopian nationalsim vis-a-vis to ethinic identity. To that extent, we in the south, we do not need tribal nationals liquidficated with hate and focus only to talk about the 'bad' nature of others, while we ourselves are more nonsense and are not clean than we expect from from others. So as to shape our future we need to be fair, sensetive and reasonable like Haddis Alemayehu was!
May the soul of this great Ethiopian rest in peace!

Now back to you!

News,

The source is VOA Amharic service. By the way the VOA long time journalist Yohanes Haile Iyesus has also succumbed to a sudden heart attack.

May his soul also rest in peace !

Hankamo,

What you have said about Hadis is a coorrect remark. There were few individuals who have seen the problems in the country at a good time and in a critical way. Hadis Alemayehu was one of them. People like him and Takele wolde Hawariat were the inspirations of the GENERATION that paid the dearest and the ultimate price of love to the people of Ethiopia.

That generation has perfectly diagnosed the countries illness. Feudalism, National opperation, and Class operation they said are the source of our backwardness and the front line enemies to be tackkled.

Though they succeded in dismantling feudalism the national question remains to be a paramount obstacle to the future of the country.

We have no choice but to acknowledge the problem and to find a political system as a solution in which every body is accommodated as equal citizen.

Awash, Hankamo and QoQ You are absolutely right.

Haddis Alemayehu was One of the great visionaries of the time. His wonderfully written Fikir Eske Mekabir is perhaps the only one which captured Feudalism and its peculiarities in Ethiopia in its raw form. It has one of the rarest qualities to make you laugh with the absurdities of the system and make you angry to the core with the injustice of it at the same time. It was revolutionary and even forewarned of the calamities that would come about if this corrosive system of brickworks whereby the peasant is at the base of it does not change soon. It is a shame that warning of yester years is not heeded and we are at the mess we are in now.

It is indeed a great loss.

He was one of the great minds born a head of their time. He indeed lived life to the fullest with clean conscience. Some writers of those generation are indeed very bright and amazing.

I personally love reading old books such as the one mentioned. There are many brave writers like him. One such writer, whose name I do not remember exactly wrote a book by the title "Alwoledim"; story about infant refusing to come to this unjust world of ours, aka, Ethiopia, from his mothers woumb.

May God bless his soul and that of hislikes.

Our country has lost a great genius of litrary works. No one has so far written a book in par excellence of "Fiker Eske Mekaber". A great reflection of subjugation, resistance, innocence, honor and love in feudal Ethiopia. A legacy that has still trapped us in so many ways.

In recognition of H.E Ato Haddis Alemayehu's contribution to the development of literature in Ethiopia there is probably one way by which we can continue his presence i.e to write down his biography.

My heart felt condolences to to his family and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

As customary tradition dictates let me say few "Engurguro" verses to the great man.

Yesemaye yemeder balebet
Yegenge ayedelem kante bet

Semayen yahel dagete
Mekabern Yahele kuluklete
Endia sendekem sentakete

Kezia lay yalech shekela seri
Deha nat alu tome adari
man astemarat
Gella afer mehonune

Gella afer hone gella afere
Ende tesera Ayekere
--------
Taftogne endalebelaw yemererew belehegne
Menew besega mot chemerehe seteghegne

I apologize for my ignorance in using the amharic font.
God bless you!

I have just learned about the final rest of haddis alemayehu.I felt realy sad and my heart went to his family.
As most fellow ethiopians have mentioned ,ato haddis has been
always remembered by his well known book fikir iska mekabir .That book was truly inspired many ethiopians from diverse ethnic and religious back ground, it was his legacy to all ethiopians and a valuable asset to Ethiopia.
I also want not to pass this oppotunity without remind my readers
that once ato haddis had turned down colonel mengistu h/mariam's offer
to high rank postion (prime ministerial post) and chose his retirement to live as ordinary citizen some where in gojam, because simply he was a man of integrity with clear conscience, never became an opportunist and allied him self with those ignorant butchers. He had always lived and side with people as he was able to reach to their minds and hearts by his book.
He was a great citizen of ethiopia
may his soul rest in peace.

I was sorry to learn of Dr. Haddis Alemayehus death, and I want to express my sympathy to his family.
Dr. Haddis masterpiece FiQir Iske MeQabir is the first book I read and liked since my younger age. Like his book Dr. Haddis is and will always be remembered.
Dr. Haddis was a remarkable man, and he made a difference in the lives of many people in his country by giving his literary works.
May he rest in peace and may God comfort his family in their time of sorrow.
